Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering exists to improve and maintain the quality of life for older people living in the London borough of Redbridge, Barking & Havering. We seek to achieve this aim by:

  • Ensuring that older people have dignity, respect, choice and that their voices are heard
  • Ensuring that services are provided in a sensitive and approachable manner
  • Being a focus of advice and help for older people

We operate an Advice and Information Service which is free, independent and confidential to older people, their relatives, carers and friends. The also provide information on issues affecting older people such as welfare benefits, community care, leisure and health.  Criteria for accessing this service is over 50.

In addition, we have a social group called Di’s Diamonds, where people can meet up, make friends and do different activities toether.  For example, bowling, cinema, tea dances etc.

B&D Volunteer Bureau

Barking & Dagenham Volunteer Bureau can provide volunteers who have been DBS checked to support vulnerable people with shopping, small DIY jobs (eg changing light bulbs, smoke alarm batteries, small repairs) and gardening.

We also have a group of qualified electricians, plumbers, TV engineers, builders and decorators who will complete minor jobs for free and will also tackle larger jobs for a very reasonable cost.  They are all DBS checked and must be booked through us.  Other services available from the Volunteer Bureau including;

  • Get Together groups, bringing older people together
  • volunteering opportunities.

Bethel Christian Centre

Bethel Christian Centre offer various community activities, including a food bank, parent and toddler groups and a community cafe.

We also do an After School Children’s Club for 5-10 year olds every Wednesday.

We have regular activities for young people aged 11-16 years.

We have a ‘Ladies Tea’ for women of all ages every 2nd Monday.  Give us a call to check if it’s on this week.  Chance to meet with other women, enjoy tea and cake & explore more about women in the bible.

Carers of Barking and Dagenham

At Barking and Dagenham Carers we provide advice, information and support for people who care. Whether you are a parent or child, husband or wife, partner, close relative or friend we are here to provide help when you need it.

Carers of Barking and Dagenham aims to assist carers living in Barking and Dagenham to be able to have an improved quality of life by offering services and support to enable them to access services more easily through active participation in the joint planning and monitoring of community carer and service development.

We also have the Memory Lane Resource Centre at 234a Porters Avenue, Dagenham which offers daycare and respite for people with dementia.  Families can self-refer and there is a charge for the services.

DABD – Advice

DABD’s comprehensive Advice & Support including welfare benefits service. We seek to help people understand their benefit entitlements and ensure that the money coming in to their households is maximised.

We offer free, confidential advice in the following areas for Barking & Dagenham residents:

DABD – personal care support

DABD provides flexible Personal Care support for people who pay for care themselves (self-funders), have a Personal Budget or receive Direct Payments.  The service supports people to live independently in their own homes.

All aspects of Personal Care are provided included support with bathing, grooming , assisting with washing and dressing, assisting with medication and collection of prescriptions, preparing light meals, shopping, domestic work including laundry/ ironing, use of all equipment such as hoists, support with social activities such as day trips and holidays (where possible) and accompanying to appointments.

This includes a specialised and personalised care support with higher levels of need. DABD  also can provide a domestic support service which includes housework, shopping and laundry.

DABD – support for older people

DABDLOGO

Our Golden Years programme provides support for people 60 and over who live in Barking & Dagenham, particularly those who are socially isolated, supporting them to make a difference to their lives.

Golden Years promotes health, well-being and independence as well as supporting clients to share their skills and participate in their community through volunteering opportunities.

We have a number of groups running at various venues throughout the week including social clubs and sewing groups. Please contact us for an up-to-date list.

Harmony House

Harmony House is a local charity offering a range of support for residents of Barking & Dagenham.  Services include:

Employment Support

The Harmony House team can support unemployed people into work.  This includes; help with CV writing, interview skills and job searching.  In addition, people on the programme can access Level 2 Food Hygiene and/or Health & Safety qualifications free of charge.

To register for the programme you must be over 19 years old.  If under 25, you must have been unemployed for 6months and over 25 must be unemployed over 1 year.  All who register must be eligible to live & work in the UK and have a visa for over 3 years.

Help with DIY & Household Tasks

Harmony House offer the FREE ‘Handy Person’ scheme providing people who can carry out small jobs that will reduce hazards and so prevent falls for example, putting up a grab rail or handrails etc.   For details of how to apply see here.

In addition, ‘Job to Do’ programme offers support with gardening, cleaning & laundry.

Silver Surfers.

We host a computer class for older people on Friday mornings. Some tuition is available. The charge is £3 per session.

Social Days

We hold all day events, providing opportunities for members of the community to gather and celebrate. St. Patrick’s Day, St George’s Day, Mat Day and Christmas were celebrated in the last year. We have a talk, lunch and afternoon dances. These events are always popular so please ring ahead to book a place.

Hope4BarkingDagenham (H4BD)

Hope4BarkingDagenham (H4BD) aims to provide emergency temporary accommodation, advice, support and meals for people sleeping rough in Barking & Dagenham. We can also provide Foodbank vouchers, help and advice including debt advice.

We also offer a night shelter for people over 18 who are homeless.  To access the shelter, please register at The Source (see details below).

We have a bereavement group for people who have experienced the loss of a family member or someone close.  This will be the last Saturday of every month, starting on 25th February from 4.30 – 6.30pm

H4BD is organised through a partnership with churches across the borough who offer this service free of charge.

Shpresa Programme

Shpresa is an organisation that offers a range of services for families across Barking & Dagenham.  This includes;

For Families: we offer support groups, parenting classes, English classes (formal & informal) and we have our own food bank.

Children & Young People: we have sports activities including football, kick boxing etc.

Training: we provide Teaching Assistant training (Level 1, 2, 3) and also Health & Social Care qualifications. Supporting people into employment.

Volunteering: we provide many opportunities for people to volunteer with us. This is particularly useful for people who are keen to move into employment.

Shpresa also has a specialist advice support at their offices in E13 on a Friday.

Our services are open to anyone and we are also have specialist support for Albanian speaking residents.

The Source Drop In

The Source is a Drop In centre in Vicarage Fields Shopping Centre.  The team there offers a listening ear and support for people who need someone to talk to or practical help.

Warmer Homes Project

A partnership of Community & Voluntary Sector organisations including CVS and the local authority (LBBD) have come together to co-ordinate the Warmer Homes Project (WHP), which is being run again this year to deliver practical help to people in need. This additional help includes:

  • Provision of a Winter Bedding Pack, which will be targeted at the most vulnerable people,
    particularly the elderly and struggling families
  • Provision of a Food Parcel: including dried and tinned food and toiletries
  • Delivery of additional benefit entitlement checks

All support is subject to funding being available and people meeting the eligibility criteria*  Pension Credit 60+, Income Support, Income based Employment Support Allowance, Income based Job Seekers Allowance, Contribution based Employment Support Allowance, Contribution based Job Seekers Allowance / Disability Benefits (AA / DLA) / Universal Credit or if Fuel Poor: A household that spends more than 10% of its household income on fuel bills. Proof of benefits will be required in ALL instances.

If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough, then you can make a referral to StreetLink who can provide additional support.
